This weekend marked a little-noticed holiday here in Switzerland, Cinco de Mayo. Although you might be wondering what cultural consequence this Mexican fête could have on life in Lausanne, we present to you…

…the perfect margarita.

Summer is on her way and nothing kicks off a warm-weather dinner party or barbeque better than the tangy sweetness of fresh lime juice, orange liqueur and tequila.
Ay, caramba!

…sorry, we couldn’t help it…won’t happen again…


2 ounces of tequila
3/4 ounce of orange liqueur (Grand Marnier)
3/4 ounce of fresh lime juice
1/4 ounce of simple syrup


Shake with ice, strain into cocktail glass with or without ice cubes according to preference. Salted rim and lime garnish optional.


Bartender’s tips:
  • It helps if you roll the lime with your palm on a hard surface before cutting…this loosens up the juices and allows you to get more liquid out when squeezing.
  • Buy a bag of ice; you’ll want to have lots on hand!
  • There are many variations that are fun to try. Once you’ve mastered the classic, consider adding strawberries, mango or other exotic fruits.
